Dissatisfied with the Goa University (GU) probe into a molestation and sexual harassment case filed by some students against Head of Department (HoD) of Political Science Aureliano Fernandes, the Goa State Commission for Women (GSCW) has taken suo moto cognizance and will investigate the complaint, GSCW Chairperson Pramod Salgaonkar said.
“The probe was going on at a very slow pace. We have been forced to take suo moto cognisance of the serious charges of sexual harassment levelled against the university’s faculty member by students,” Salgaonkar said.
Last month, several second-year post-graduate students had accused Fernandes of molesting and sexually harassing them. One of the students said the teacher gave her zero marks in an exam for rejecting his advances.
The students alleged that one girl had dropped out of the university because of sexual harassment.
Sources close to Fernandes have countered that the case was filed by students who were particularly “lacklustre in academic pursuit”. “They are the same students who were charged with ragging by first-year political science students,” a source said.
Salgaonkar said the GSCW had stayed away from the matter so far, because the commission had received no formal complaint from the students.

Sexual Harassment case at Goa University could have been drummed up!!

Honestly, it makes my blood boil.

There is however the ‘angle’ that the entire sexual harrassment  has been
enacted  and pushed forward to save the ragging culprits.

And it is possible that the alleged accused in the sexual harrassment case
is a victim of  the internal politics of the University as well as the dirty
politics of political parties.

I fail to understand why Manohar Parrikar  had to be involved in the first
place in the affairs of the University.
Were there no other ‘non-political’ personages in Goa who could be
approached to look into this matter??

I have filed an RTI application  asking for the relevant details of the
‘sexual’ as well as ‘ragging’ encounters,
as I happen to know Prof. Aureliano Fernandes very well and I will want this
entire thing to be thoroughly
investigated, impartially, at the highest level, without any political
influence whatsoever and the culprits brought to book irrespective whether
it is Aureliano Fernandes, the ragging masters and mistresses and the sexual
live bombs parading in the University as students.

I have also written to the Prof. S Thorat, Chairman, University Grant
Commission (U G C), with copies to the Justices of the Supreme Court as well
as the Ministry of HRD, New Delhi  to request for a thorough impartial and
unbiased  high level investigation in the matter.

Goa University officials sitting on sexual harassment complaint

Panaji, May 4 (IANS) While the Goa University (GU) has assured to take prompt action against a senior faculty member following an inquiry by its committee to prevent sexual harassment, the varsity has not taken any action in another similar case for nearly two years.
GU was rocked by a sexual harassment scandal last month, after students from the political science department accused their head of department (HoD) Aureliano Fernandes of molesting them.

While the GU registrar has promised quick action in this case, a complaint filed in 2007 is still to see a logical conclusion. U.A. Vinay Kumar, at present a reader in the department of philosophy, was accused of sexually harassing a lady lecturer employed in the varsity.

While the complaint dates back to 2005, the GU officials acted only after the Goa University Teachers’ Association (GUTA) pressurised the varsity administration to act.

The case was finally referred to the prevention of sexual harassment committee in 2007, which submitted its report nine months ago. The university is still sitting on the recommendations of the committee.

Speaking to IANS, GU registrar Mohan Sangodkar said the matter would be immediately looked into.

“The matter has been forwarded to the university’s executive committee, which will decide the course of action,” he said.

Meanwhile, the GU official also said that the university’s anti-ragging committee would submit its report on May 9, into the allegations of ragging made by first-year Master’s students of the political science department.

Those accused of ragging are the same students who have charged their HoD Aureliano Fernandes with molestation.
